A rally, organised by The Building and Construction Trades Council, is set to be held on Thursday in New York, US, in support of controversial plans to build a US$12bn casino complex in Hudson Yards.

The plans have been opposed by non-profit Friends of the High Line, which argues that the new complex, which features an 80-story tower, would block the sun and obstruct the view from the High Line, the city’s elevated public park.

The New York Post quotes trade-union President Gary LaBarbera as saying: “It is in fact the elite who serve on the High Line Board that do not want development because they believe their sunlight and view are more important than career opportunities.”

A poll by Friends of the High Line found that 56 per cent of West Side voters oppose the proposed zoning changes that would allow for the casino project, and only 24 per cent support it.

State and city approvals have yet to be granted to the project.
