The Belle of Baton Rouge sailed away from its dock Tuesday morning, marking a milestone in the $141 million redevelopment of the downtown casino.
Two tugboats helped the aging riverboat move out of its slip on the chilly January morning and into the Mississippi River. They helped direct the riverboat to a Terrebonne Parish scrapyard, where Louisiana Scrap Metal Recycling will dismantle the vessel. More than 97% of the riverboat will be recycled.
“This sendoff shows that things are changing, and it’s a clear sign that the transformation of this area into a vibrant, thriving entertainment destination is well underway,” said Richard Cannon, the general manager of the Belle.
