The sponsor of a bill creating a revenue-sharing commission for the Petersburg casino says he plans to pull the legislation contingent upon a meeting of local officials scheduled for Thursday.
In a statement released by his office, Del. Mike Cherry, R-Colonial Heights, took the city of Petersburg to task for lambasting the legislation, which had the backing of Del. Kim Taylor, R-Dinwiddie County, whose district includes Petersburg. Cherry claimed House Bill 2232 was “not intended in any way” to take away revenue from Petersburg. Instead, it would “as my job demands, lift up the entire region,” he said.
“It was particularly disappointing that, in public discussions surrounding the bill, city officials decided it was appropriate to resort to name-calling,” Cherry said.
