The online gambling landscape in Germany is witnessing significant changes as state regulations begin to emerge, hoping to bring both safety and economic benefits amidst a previously murky legal framework. After years of prohibition, Germany is now seeing an influx of state-approved online casinos, igniting discussions on industry regulation and player protection.

Online gambling was once an illicit activity in Germany, forcing players to turn to foreign platforms. However, with the implementation of the 2021 Glücksspielstaatsvertrag, foreign companies can now secure licenses for online gaming operations, such as poker and sports betting within the German market. This regulatory shift follows the launch of the first official, state-regulated online casino in Bayern in April 2024, paving the way for other states to establish their own.
