The Star Sydney’s casino license will remain suspended for at least another six months with the property under the watch of Special Manager Nick Weeks throughout, the NSW Independent Casino Commission has confirmed.

A day after Queensland’s regulator delayed suspending the casino license of The Star Gold Coast until 30 September 2025, its southern counterpart maintained the status quo in NSW where Star’s license has been suspended since October 2022. Star was deemed unsuitable at the time after an initial inquiry uncovered the depth of its relationship with Asian junket operators plus multiple other compliance failures.

Although the NICC on Thursday acknowledged that Star is finally making progress in its remediation efforts in the wake of a second inquiry that also deemed the company unsuitable, Chief Commissioner Philip Crawford said there was still work to do.

“We welcome progress in The Star’s remediation efforts and are confident the company is moving in the right direction with its remediation plans,” Crawford said.

“The next six months is a critical phase for The Star as it will need to show further progress with its remediation activities whilst also stabilizing its finances.”

Star Entertainment Group CEO and Managing Director Steve McCann added, “We appreciate the comments made by the NICC in respect of the Company’s progress in respect of its remediation plan and note the NICC’s decision to continue the licence suspension of The Star Sydney and reassess The Star Sydney’s suitability to regain its casino licence in September 2025.

“The Star recognizes the importance of continuing to deliver on its commitments under the remediation plan and returning to suitability.”
