A DRAFT LETTER OF SUPPORT SAYS A TRIBAL CASINO “would be an economic and social benefit to the City of Moorhead”

MOORHEAD, Minn. (KVRR) – The Clay County Commission has invited representatives from the White Earth Nation to attend a meeting next week to discuss plans for the tribe’s recent land purchase near Moorhead.
The tribe recently acquired about 280 acres near the junction of I-94 and State Highway 336.
Tribal officials have submitted a proposed Letter of Support that says “The Clay County Board of Commissioners supports the White Earth Nation’s application to transfer 280.64 acres of land in Clay County…into trust for tribal gaming and other purposes.”
The draft also says “A White Earth tribal gaming facility on the Subject Property would be an economic and social benefit to the City of Moorhead and the other surrounding communities.”
In March, the tribe said any speculation regarding specific projects, including gaming facilities, is premature.
The letter says commissioners “are authorized to provide this letter of support to the Bureau of Indian Affairs and other federal and state agencies in connection with White Earth Nation’s fee to trust application.”
“We have respectfully requested that representatives from the White Earth Tribal Nation attend an upcoming Clay County Board of Commissioners meeting on April 22nd,” County Administrator Stephen Larson said.
Larson says the commission could gain a better understanding of the strategic vision for the property and better understand the impacts of placing the land in a trust prior to taking formal action on the letter of support.
