Quapaw Nation Fall Gathering today; 1824 Treaty on display at Downstream Casino – Newstalk KZRG
The Quapaw Nation’s Fall Gathering continues at Downstream Casino today, Saturday, Nov. 16th. This year’s Fall Gathering coincides with the 200th anniversary of the Treaty of 1824 signed between the Quapaw and United States which removed our ancestors from their homeland. The treaty will be on display at the Downstream lobby from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. A speech on the treaty will be delivered at 2 p.m. Barry Linduff, Executive Director of Communications for the Quapaw Nation, says it’s not something you’ll see everyday. “This is a rare opportunity for people to lay eyes on a document that often doesn’t see the light of day,” Linduff says. “It’s important for everyone to see it, witness it and understand it.” “The document is particularly relevant because the Quapaw Nation ceded 3.5 million acres of land in Arkansas,” he adds. “That eventually led to the tribe’s removal and subsequent move to northeast Oklahoma where they live today.” Downstream is located at 69300 E. Nee Road in Quapaw. The casino is easily accessible from I-44. The Fall Gathering also will feature arts & crafts vendors and other activities. Source link

Nebraska casino panel hires auditor to keep eye on revenue
After a bruising state report questioned the oversight of millions of dollars in state casino gaming revenue, the Nebraska Racing and Gaming Commission revealed Friday that it has hired an auditor. Among his duties will be to review financial documents and reports from gaming operators to ensure compliance with the Nebraska Racetrack Gaming Act and commission regulations. State Auditor Mike Foley, in the October auditor report, castigated the agency’s oversight of casino tax revenues as “lackluster at best and oftentimes nonexistent.” The new gaming auditor, Ari Saltzman, was announced at the commission’s meeting in Lincoln. Saltzman’s annual salary is $45,364.80. People are also reading… The agency is charged with regulating Nebraska casinos and collecting taxes equal to 20% of gross gaming revenues from them. Denny Lee, commission chairman, said the hire had been contemplated months before the release of the critical state report. The agency’s oversight responsibilities expanded “exponentially” after voters approved casino gaming in November 2020, he said. Four casinos, paired with licensed horse tracks, are now open in Columbus, Grand Island, Lincoln and Omaha. “This was never a concern prior to expansion to include casino gaming, because essentially the funds that came in from horse racing over the course of the last 20 years were dropping,” he said. Lee said the commission had requested the state audit to identify deficiencies in the agency’s processes and procedures so the commission could correct them. “We asked for it,” he said. The audit covered the fiscal year ending June 30, a period that covered the first full year of casino gambling at Nebraska racetracks. During that year, the commission collected nearly $20 million of casino taxes, which goes to several funds. The bulk of it — 70% — goes into the Property Tax Credit Cash Fund, which is used to provide property owners with a tax credit on their bills. Twenty-five percent of the gaming tax goes to the county where the racetrack is located, and if the racetrack is located partially within a city or a village, the county and city or village split it. The remaining 5% is split between the state’s general fund and the Compulsive Gamblers Assistance Fund. Lee said Executive Director Casey Ricketts, while still in interim status earlier this year, identified the need to hire an auditor. Ricketts said the effort to recruit an auditor to the agency began before that. “This is a position that we’ve actually actively been trying to recruit for about a year and a half,” she said. The hiring is part of an effort to bring on sufficient staff to carry out the expanded mission of the agency, she said. Ricketts said the agency has already begun to address the deficiencies identified in the auditor’s report. Ricketts was appointed interim director last January, and the commissioners in October recommended her for executive director. Gov. Jim Pillen approved their recommendation. Lee said the state auditor brought up some good points and recommendations, essentially creating a road map for improving oversight. Lee said he wants the commission’s new auditor to work “hand in hand” with the state auditor to ensure the integrity of the accounting. He said Ricketts and her staff would be working closely with them as well. “I don’t want any surprises,” he said. “I don’t want the Legislature or the public or the industry to think that there’s miscalculations. I think we have a duty to that.” He said commissioners who govern the agency are focused on shoring up their regulatory review of the casino operations. The state auditor’s report said there was no documentation that the commission had reviewed reports from the casinos to verify that the state received the correct amount of revenues, even though the commission’s own regulations required weekly, quarterly and annual reports. Every Virginia casino city “wanted Hard Rock”
CEO of Hard Rock International Jim Allen and Chairman of The United Company Jim McGlothlin share their story on how they met and made a plan to bring the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino to Bristol, Virginia. BRISTOL, Va. – As the CEO of Hard Rock International, Jim Allen has helped open business locations across the globe, but Thursday proved to be an emotional day. The guitar-smashing, rock-and-roll-styled ceremony which christened the new Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Bristol was the highlight of a five-year journey Allen and the Seminole Tribe — which owns Hard Rock — have taken with Bristol businessmen Jim McGlothlin and partner Clyde Stacy. Allen first flew to Bristol Virginia in 2019 to look at the shuttered mall property that McGlothlin and Stacy envisioned as a casino. Within a few hours of meeting, they reached an agreement for Hard Rock to manage a resort hotel and casino on the Gate City Highway site. “It’s truly an amazing day. We have so many locations around the world but this one is truly special. Bristol is such an amazing historical area and our partnership with Mr. McGlothlin and Clyde is really a match made in heaven. We are honored to be their partner.,” Allen said. People are also reading… At that point, McGlothlin and Stacy had more vision than plan in addition to needing legislative approval from the state. The men recalled their sides of the meeting during remarks at the opening ceremony. The connection happened almost by chance. McGlothlin was in Scottsdale Arizona attending a Barrett-Jackson auto auction along with former NASCAR driver Rusty Wallace. Later they went to dinner and the casino came up in conversation. A woman at the table asked who would manage it, McGlothlin recalled Thursday. “I said, I didn’t have any idea. She said if you’re going to do it right you need Hard Rock. She called Jim Allen and left him a message asking him to call,” McGlothlin said. Allen recalls taking that first meeting after Hard Rock did some homework. “Actually, the call went to [HR executive] Jeff Hook first. Jeff said, ‘There is this gentleman [McGlothlin] who has had amazing success. He really fits with the brand because he’s part of his community. It’s not just about the almighty dollar, so what do you think?’ “I said, ‘Bristol probably isn’t the largest economic market,’ but I did exactly what Jim said, and we checked our schedules, and I was here the next morning.” They met at the mall site. “He was here from Fort Lauderdale at 8 in the morning. At 11:30 we had a letter of intent, and it was the best thing that ever happened to us,” McGlothlin said. “It wasn’t about the economics. I just felt this amazing connection, particularly with Jim, because of his character. That’s something that really means a lot to me personally and, obviously, representing the Tribe and being partners with the Tribe, it’s about the future,” Allen said. “He’s right, we basically had the deal done in a very short period of time. “Like any relationship you have to navigate through all the ups and downs of budgets and buildings and capital markets, but I am truly honored to be your partner Jim and Clyde. We’re so fortunate. Hopefully we’ve collectively created something that everyone is very proud of.” Compared to larger cities like Norfolk, Portsmouth and Richmond included in the casino legislation, Bristol was an anomaly. “I certainly didn’t have a lot of knowledge of Bristol … We looked at all the different markets and there is so much history here. Everyone knows Bristol for NASCAR and the race but when I learned about Jim and his background and all the different things he does for the communities, it really seemed pretty special,” Allen said. As for the site, it wasn’t love at first sight and may be the first Hard Rock in a former mall. “When I first came down, they had signs up in the old Sears building and that will be the casino. I said, ‘I don’t think that’s going to work.’ Navigating what we could use of the old mall and, obviously, building this new facility, it turned out well.” Virginia’s casino legislation included five cities and Allen disclosed Thursday all approached Hard Rock. “We were asked by all the other locations. Every single one wanted the Hard Rock brand,” Allen said. “I’m not going to suggest we would have been successful in achieving that, but we were reached out to by all the other locations. Every single one.” They chose Bristol and the deal was announced in late 2019, days before a Virginia Joint Legislative Audit Review Committee study about potential casino impacts was released. “We look more long-term about the relationship not just how much gross money a facility can generate,” Allen said. “We knew Bristol had this amazing legacy that we could build upon, the history of music and obviously country music. That’s something very important.” dmcgee@bristolnews.com — Twitter: @DMcGeeBHC Get local news delivered to your inbox! Subscribe to our Daily Headlines newsletter. Source link

Hundreds of Hotel Workers Go on Strike at a Casino Near the Las Vegas Strip
One year after the Las Vegas Strip’s casinos narrowly avoided tens of thousands of hospitality workers going on strike days before the city was set to host its first Formula One race, workers at an off-Strip casino walked off the job following a contentious fight for a new contract. Hospitality staff at the off-Strip Virgin Hotels Las Vegas went on strike on Friday, November 15, marking the first open-ended strike in 22 years for the Culinary Workers Union, the largest labor union in Nevada, which has about 60,000 members. The union posted about the labor action on its social media on Friday, November 15: “@VirginHotelsLV casino is ON STRIKE! Virgin hotel workers are walking out RIGHT NOW at Virgin Las Vegas for a fair contract! Stand with the workers, DO NOT CROSS THE STRIKE LINE!” In a news release, Culinary Union secretary-treasurer Ted Pappageorge stated that the company’s proposal worked out to be an estimated 30 cents per year added to wages over five years, after deducting money for benefits. “Workers at Virgin Las Vegas deserve a first-class contract with fair wage increases, and they are organized and ready to strike for it,” Pappageorge stated in the release. The union is pushing for Virgin’s 700 hospitality workers to win a new five-year union contract with increased wages and says that Virgin Hotels does not want to give its workers any wage increases during the first three years of that contract. “The Virgin Las Vegas’ proposal is miles apart and is an insult to every worker,” says Pappageorge. The strike will impact all major areas of operations at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas, including housekeeping, food and beverage departments, and the following unionized restaurants: Casa Calavera, Funny Library Coffee Shop, Juice Bar, the Bar at Commons Club, the Kitchen at Commons Club, and the Shag Room. Almost exactly one year ago, Culinary Union members reached an agreement with on-Strip casino employers just before the strike deadline for a new contract — one that included a roughly 32 percent salary increase over the life of the contract, including a 10 percent bump in pay in the first year. While Friday’s strike is significantly smaller than the ones that were anticipated last year, the walkout will still cause disruptions for the 1,500-room property just off the Las Vegas Strip — especially in anticipation of the Formula 1 Las Vegas Grand Prix that kicks off Thursday, November 21. It is the union’s first open-ended strike since 2002, when workers walked off the job for 10 days at the Golden Gate hotel in downtown Las Vegas. Culinary Union members from the Las Vegas Strip and downtown Las Vegas will join the strike line in solidarity to picket on Saturday, November 16 and the union requests that customers do not cross the picket line. Virgin Hotels Las Vegas did not respond to a request for comment. Sign up for the newsletter Eater Vegas Sign up for our newsletter. Source link
The National Grange’s annual convention takes over the Isle Casino Hotel Bettendorf for nearly a week
The National Grange is the United States’ oldest agricultural fraternity, advocating for rural America. It’s a social organization that encourages its 140,000 members to promote the political and economic well-being of communities, a collective sense of husbandry being shared among all. Over 1,400 local chapters exist throughout all corners of the country, from Hawaii to Alaska to Maine. Since Monday, November 11th, events making up its 158th annual convention have been happening at the Isle Casino Hotel in Bettendorf. The Grange splits up the nation into five different regions on its own map, and each year the organization rotates through them to host its yearly convention at locations all over. Last year, it was held in Niagara Falls. Next year it will take place for the first time ever on a cruise ship in Miami. President of the National Grange Christine Hamp said the organization offers its members an opportunity to shape it in whatever way they like. It can look different from what it was in the past, but in all things with it, there’s always an emphasis on what’s important in one’s community. “The number-one thing with Grange is that we can make it what we want it to be, what you and I want it to be. It’s a different Grange than what our grandfathers had, because it moves, and it morphs with what’s going on in society,” Hamp said. “And what we do today and how we do it is so much different than what we did a generation ago. It’s what is important to you; it’s what’s important to your community right here, right now, today.” At these conventions, Grangers, a title often used to identify individuals comprising the Grange’s membership, come together to discuss matters and policies relevant to the maintenance and future of the organization. These happenings also aim to present networking opportunities to those behind and in support of the organization’s mission, offering themselves as social events for Grangers nationwide. Some events at the convention are exclusive to Grangers, but most are open to the public. Non-members have been invited to attend over 60 workshops on big ideas and legislative efforts, as well as a handful of showcases. Veterans in the area were honored during the Quilts of Valor presentation back on Wednesday. On Friday night, November 15th, for example, the Grange will honor the excellence of teachers, firefighters, and law-enforcement officials for its evening of recognition. An installation of officers is to occur before the award ceremony. Hamp emphasized that people wishing to participate in these events should, because they’re not closed off to the community but rather naturally open to it. She said all should feel invited to engage in conversations motivated by this urge to inspire positive change. “I would hope that anybody that was not a member that came to our events would feel very welcome, would feel like they were embraced in this group that is here with the sole focus of making our communities better,” Hamp said. Attendees haven’t been limited to a few walls in Bettendorf, either. They were taken out for a riverboat cruise on the Mississippi River on Monday, where they gathered for a luncheon. Grangers unfamiliar with the Quad Cities have even been able to explore the gems of the region, visiting places like the John Deere Pavilion in Moline and the Figge Art Museum in Davenport. Hundreds of hospitality workers are on strike at a casino near the Las Vegas Strip
LAS VEGAS — Hundreds of hospitality workers at a casino near the Las Vegas Strip walked off the job just before dawn Friday amid a long and highly contentious fight for a new contract. The work stoppage at Virgin Hotels Las Vegas marks the first open-ended strike in 22 years for the Culinary Workers Union, the largest labor union in Nevada, with about 60,000 members. Workers at the casino also walked off the job for two days earlier this year as negotiations escalated, hoping to pressure Virgin Hotels to agree to a new five-year deal with higher wages and better benefits. Housekeepers, porters, bellhops and servers picketed outside the hotel-casino, which was formerly the Hard Rock Las Vegas. Michael Renick, a bartender who has worked at Virgin Hotels for about two years, said he’s already used to living paycheck to paycheck and closely monitoring his bank balance. That’s why, he said, he was willing to go on strike for as long as it takes to get a fair contract, even if it means getting a second job during the strike. ”I’m ready to go for as long as I need to, and I’m pretty sure that’s how everyone else is feeling too,” he said. The union pays striking workers $500 per week for picketing shifts for at least five days. Virgin Hotels said in a statement that it is focused on reaching a deal with the union that is ”economically viable” for both its union workers and its other employees. Source link
