Future of floating Buenos Aires casino in doubt — CDC Gaming
James, G3 Newswire Email, LinkedIn, and more The Supreme Court of Justice unanimously revoked a precautionary measure that had allowed the Floating Casino in Puerto Madero to operate despite the expiration of its concession. As a result, the casino’s ability to continue operations is now uncertain. The ruling impacts Casinos de Buenos Aires SA, the company responsible for operating the ‘Estrella de la Fortuna’ and ‘Princess’ vessels, whose original concession expired in 2019. For now, the floating casino will remain in operation, as another precautionary measure has been in effect since 2021 and is irreversible due to the fact that the State never contested it. However, the Supreme Court urged the Federal Administrative Litigation Chamber to send it the main file, in order to determine whether the gaming hall can continue operating in the City of Buenos Aires. Casino CEO Tilman Fertitta Will Step Down From Role If He Becomes Ambassador To Italy
The Senate is expected to decide on Tilman Fertitta’s nomination as ambassador to Italy this week. If approved, the Texas billionaire is expected to resign as CEO of his company, which includes significant casino holdings nationwide. Fertitta heads Landry’s Inc., which includes restaurants, entertainment, and casinos. The company owns and operates several Golden Nugget casinos in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, Louisiana, Atlantic City, and other locations. In addition to those holdings, Fertitta owns the NBA’s Houston Rockets and is the largest single shareholder of Wynn Resorts. The entrepreneur owns at least a $50 million equity holding in DraftKings and $25 million in Penn Entertainment. DraftsKings acquired Golden Nugget Online Gaming in 2022 for more than $1.5 billion. As a result, the DraftKings online casino is available to Americans in five states. In a letter to the U.S. Office of Government Ethics on March 14, Fertitta outlined his business plans if he received the ambassador role. That includes stepping back from management and simply receiving income from his business interests. “I am eligible to receive a severance payment from Fertitta Entertainment, LLC, but I have elected to forfeit it. I will receive a lump sum payment of my deferred compensation plan following my resignation. “I will continue to retain a passive interest in these entities, but I will not provide services material to the production of income. Workers at Eastern Band Cherokees’ Caesars Southern Indiana Casino vote to authorize strike — CDC Gaming

More than 140 workers at Caesars Southern Indiana Hotel & Casino voted by a 98% margin to authorize a strike, according to a news release from Teamsters Local 89. Teamsters say the “overwhelming” vote is a direct response to management’s refusal to offer a fair contract. “Our members are united and ready to fight for the strongest possible agreement,” said Avral Thompson, President of Local 89. “This vote sends a clear message — we will not back down. If management won’t negotiate in good faith, we’re prepared to take action.” Caesars Southern Indiana, owned and operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians (EBCI), pulled in more than $240 million in revenue last year, making it one of the most profitable casinos in the state. Scotts Valley files lawsuit against DOI action with casino – The Vacaville Reporter
The deck has once again been reshuffled concerning the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians desire to build a casino in Vallejo. The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians on Tuesday filed a federal lawsuit and an emergency motion for a Temporary Restraining Order to block the Department of the Interior’s attempt to reopen the Tribe’s Gaming Eligibility Determination. The Scotts Valley Band of Promo Indians wants to build a proposed 400,000-square foot casino project that includes the construction of 24 single-family residences, a tribal administration building, parking garage and a 45-acre biological preserve area on a 160-acre property located within and adjacent to the city boundary in Solano County, near the intersection of Interstate 80 and Highway 37. The casino facility, at a cost of $700 million, would be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The land will aim to serve as the cornerstone of the Tribe’s efforts to enhance economic self-sufficiency and foster community benefits. The development is projected to create thousands of jobs in construction and ongoing operations, paying hundreds of millions of dollars in wages. Meanwhile, opposition to the proposal remains. Last week the United Auburn Indian Community, the Yocha Dehe Wintun Nation and the Kletsel Dehe Wintun Nation — a gaming and a non-gaming tribe respectively — filed lawsuits seeking to overturn the U.S. Department of the Interior’s approval of the project. Two days later, the Department of Interior formally let interested parties know that it will reconsider an approval of the casino project that it originally gave in January, five days before U.S. President Donald Trump was sworn into office. According to a letter sent out Tuesday by the Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians, the Department of Interior’s action on March 27 “seeks to upend years of federal approvals and threatens a carefully planned economic development project that would provide jobs, revenue, and long-term stability for the Tribe and the City of Vallejo. The Tribe is calling the action motivated by unfounded opposition from competitors, legally baseless, and in direct violation of the federal Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, federal trust obligations, and basic principles of administrative law.” The letter goes on to state that the Department’s action purports to “temporarily rescind” the Gaming Eligibility Determination while it reopens the record for reconsideration. This effectively ignores the determination that the Tribe’s trust land in Vallejo is eligible for gaming — despite DOI’s own prior conclusion after years of review. “The favorable determination the Tribe received in January came after years of extensive administrative review and litigation,” the letter states. “Scotts Valley successfully challenged an earlier negative decision, which a federal court found to be deficient. The court ordered the matter remanded to the Department. The Jan. 10 decision was based on evidence submitted by all parties as of 2019, and the Department already considered and rejected the points put forward by opposing casino operators.” The tribe contends that the Department of Interior is attempting to revisit a final decision that it had no legal basis to reopen. “This is a shameful decision,” said Chairman Shawn Davis. “We will not allow bureaucrats trample our sovereignty or destroy the opportunities we have fought decades to secure. This land is ours. The law is on our side. And we will see the Department of the Interior in court. “This is like trying to replay a football game after the final whistle has blown and the score has been posted. We won. The process is over. We shouldn’t have to replay the game because others don’t like the outcome.” The Scotts Valley Band of Pomo Indians remains steadfast in its mission to exercise its sovereign rights, develop its economy, and hold the federal government accountable to its promises. Murder suspect to be sentenced for 2014 casino shooting in Delano
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) — A murder suspect, Carlos Augusto Reveles, is scheduled to appear in court next month for sentencing after pleading no contest to charges related to a 2014 shooting that left 47-year-old David Medina dead, according to court records. The incident happened in the parking lot of the Aviator Casino in Delano. RELATED: Man arrested on suspicion of murder in casino parking lot Reveles was initially arrested in August 2014, accused of killing Medina during a fight in the Aviator Casino parking lot that escalated into gunfire on August 9, 2014. Delano police officers responded to the scene and found Medina had been shot multiple times. Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer released a statement in 2019 following Reveles’ re-arrest: “Murder cases do not have a statute of limitations, and we are committed to working with police agencies to investigate homicides for as long as it takes to develop the evidence needed for prosecution.” Reveles had been released in 2015 pending the review of lab evidence. He was later re-arrested in 2019. According to Kern County Superior Court records, Reveles pleaded no contest on April 1 and is set to appear for sentencing on May 22. Source link
The latest threats to casino security use technology as the weapon, panel says — CDC Gaming
Rather than going to the cage and demanding money at gunpoint or stealing a huge stack of chips from a table, criminals continually find new ways to rob casinos. “Navigating Emerging Threats in Casino Gaming” was a lead-off session Tuesday at the Indian Gaming Tradeshow & Convention in San Diego. The panel explored the rise of sophisticated criminal tactics, with an increasing reliance on technology, that poses significant challenges to casino operations. Panelists outlined the need for extensive cooperation, constant vigilance, and enhanced awareness among casino management, security teams, surveillance professionals, and regulators to prevent from being victimized and outsmarted by cunning adversaries. The panel was moderated by Dave Vialpando, executive director of the Pala Gaming Commission. Panelists included George Jenkot, vice president of security and surveillance with the Firekeepers Casino Hotel in Battle Creek, Michigan, and Rudolph Wambsgans, chairman of the Tunica-Biloxi Tribal Gaming Commission in Mississippi. The conviction in January of a Chicago man for stealing $700,000 from Four Winds Casino in Michigan in July 2023 was presented as evidence. A Four Winds employee who handles cash was tricked into stuffing $700,000 in cash into a designer bag and driving 85 miles to Gary, Indiana. Calls and texts made the person appear to be a tribal official for the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. Authorities recovered $18,000 from a home safe of the perpetrator. That scam was used in Nevada and other western states that year. Casinos face both internal and external threats, according to Vialpando, former executive director for the Michigan tribe at the center of the social-engineering scam. The external threats may come from individuals or organized groups that include remote and coordinated attacks. “Don’t underestimate the level of organization and sophistication of these groups in targeting our casinos,” Vialpando said. The internal threats are perpetrated by employees, sometimes colluding with outsiders. These include theft, embezzlement, cheating, workplace violence, and property damage. “We’re always thinking about anything that could affect live gaming, like cheats. Anything anybody gives up to the operation’s advantage is a huge problem mathematically,” Jenkot said. Wambsgans cited an incident in which an employee was charged with colluding with an outsider to steal from the casino. She was accused of putting points on the players card of a friend worth hundreds of thousands of dollars over more than a year. “The external threat can be huge. But from my experience, the internal threat is more a concern,” Wambsgans said. “The ongoing internal threat by employees in collusion with outsiders is a greater threat, because that’s happening almost daily.” Jenkot said it starts with weaknesses within the process between internal controls and uninformed gaming regulations. They had a table games dealer prosecuted for dumping games to friends valued at $16,000 over a couple of weekends. “Ever since COVID, a lot of properties are hiring people they wouldn’t have even interviewed before,” Jenkot said. “It gives you an idea of what we’re dealing with in an area of control like surveillance. That creates a huge vulnerability. When it comes to employee collusion, obviously, substandard surveillance employees not only cause weaknesses in catching collusion, but can actually be bad actors themselves.” Vialpando said while some operators see the regulators as a nuisance, they’re there to maintain high standards. Most of the policies were created because something bad happened and was recognized as a vulnerability. “It’s a challenge today to find qualified individuals and we do have pressure,” Vialpando said. “They’re sending us people who just don’t meet the level of qualification necessary to be licensed.” Wambsgans said when vulnerabilities are discovered, it’s important to communicate them effectively and stress that tribal assets must be protected.
