Officials said a failed floating buoy between two old pedestrian bridges near the river caused the collapse.
BATON ROUGE, La. — A bridge that once linked the Mississippi Riverfront in downtown Baton Rouge to the former Belle of Baton Rouge riverboat casino collapsed on Friday, according to WBRZ.
Officials said a failed floating buoy between two old pedestrian bridges near the river caused the collapse.
Belle of Baton Rouge casino officials said the structure is secure and unlikely to suffer further damage. Security has been posted to keep people off the collapsed walkway.
The buoy system was designed to let the bridges adjust with the river’s water levels, but after the collapse, officials plan to remove all remaining buoys and bridges, our partners reported.
No injuries were reported.
The hotel once known as Belle of Baton Rouge has rebranded as Bally’s, while the relocated land-based casino is still awaiting rebrand approval from the Louisiana Gaming Commission.
The riverboat was relocated to Terrebonne Parish in January, where it will be dismantled and largely recycled, according to WBRZ.
