CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Cedar Rapids City Council is looking to rezone the property of the Cedar Crossing Casino & Entertainment Center to allow for changes to the layout and project plans.
The council held a public hearing at last Tuesday’s meeting to change the land from a mixed-use Urban Neighborhood General and Parks and Public Open Space and rezones it into a Planned Unit Development (PUD).
Council documents say the rezoning would make for input to the property’s landscaping, parking lot, among other feedback for the final design, including flood mitigation efforts.
“The overlay takes into consideration the unique nature of the proposed casino, and the city has worked with the developer on a site design that promotes connections to downtown and will allow for complementary development nearby,” Cedar Rapids Zoning Administrator Seth Gunnerson said during a presentation Tuesday.
Second and third readings for the change are set for April before it can be made final.
This comes as Cedar Crossing continues to be challenged in court amid legal concerns from Riverside Casino.
In addition to a gaming floor, the plans for the casino include bars and restaurants, a 1,500-capacity event venue, along with a STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) learning area, and an arts and cultural center.
The Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission approved Linn County’s gaming license in February.
