Michigan is home to many of our best sports betting sites, a flourishing real-money online casino industry, and numerous brick-and-mortar casinos in its most populous city.
The Michigan Gaming Control Board announced its casino revenue figures for December 2024, revealing that Detroit casinos collected $109.6 million. That marked a nearly 5.7% decline from last December when Detroit casinos brought in $116.2 million.
Table games and slots account for $109.3 million in total revenue, while retail Michigan sports betting added over $275,000.
MGM Grand Detroit accounted for 47% of casino revenues in December, generating $51.2 million, a rise of 1.3% from last year. Meanwhile, MotorCity Casino covered 30% of the casino revenue figures, with its numbers falling 4.8% year-on-year. Hollywood Casino at Greektown is the final Detroit casino, accounting for 23% of revenues. The casino saw its revenues drop by $4.1% to $25.1 million in December.
Those three casinos paid $8.9 million in taxes to Michigan, down from $9 million the year prior.
Poor December caps strong 2024 and Q4
While the December 2024 numbers marked a decline from the prior year, the revenue generated over the entire year increased. Detroit casino revenues hit $1.29 billion for 2024, compared to $1.237 billion the year before.
Slots generated $1.03 billion of the 2024 figure, almost 80% of all revenues collected by Detroit casinos. Meanwhile, table games generated $250.96 million, 19.4% of the total. Retail sportsbooks operated by Detroit casinos only provided 0.8% of revenues in 2024, hitting $9.7 million.
Interestingly, the casino market shares for 2024 were exactly the same as in December 2024, with MGM Grand Detroit taking 47% of revenues, MotorCity collecting 30%, and Hollywood Casino at Greektown 23%.
For 2024, MGM Grand Detroit’s revenues from slots and table games climbed by 7% compared to 2023, reaching $603.72 million. MotorCity increased revenues by 3.3% to $385.87 million. Meanwhile, Hollywood Casino at Greektown revenues increased 2.7% year-on-year to $292.86 million.
Q4 of 2024 was also a fruitful period for Detroit casinos despite declining revenues year-on-year in December. Revenues increased by 18.7% compared to Q4 in 2023. MGM Grand Detroit increased its revenues by 26.4% to $149.9 million, while MotorCity’s numbers rose by 15.9% to $97.8 million. Hollywood Casino at Greektown revenues jumped 8.5% to hit $71.8 million.
Detroit casinos contribute to positive end after turbulent year
There are three land-based casinos in Detroit, and this model will continue for some time, having been in place for several years. However, the rest of the Michigan gaming market is far more turbulent. The Michigan Gaming Control Board shut down several illegal gambling operations in 2024, including unlicensed locations providing slot-like gaming. For its efforts, the Michigan Gaming Control Board was nominated as a finalist for Vixio’s 2024 Global Regulatory Awards in the Regulatory Initiative category.
Meanwhile, the Michigan online casino market saw plenty of changes, with Caesars Entertainment acquiring WynnBET’s online gaming operations in the state and later launching Horseshoe Online Casino in the Great Lake State.
