Springfield firefighters evacuated the MGM casino Saturday evening after a fire in ductwork set off alarms and filled the upper floors of the building with smoke.

Springfield Fire Department spokesman Lt. Brendan Shea said six engines, three truck companies, a rescue vehicle and three chiefs responded to what he called a “high-rise assignment” after two separate alarms were received from the casino. The department received a 911 call at 5:39 p.m. reporting smoke in the building and simultaneously a sprinkler alarm.

Shea said the fire appeared to have been contained within ductwork that ran from the kitchen in Chandler’s Restaurant to the roof.
