Casino workers in southern Indiana strike after failed contract talks with Caesars Southern Indiana and the EBCI.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Casino employees in southern Indiana will head to the picket line after a strike was called following failed contract negotiations.

According to the Teamsters Local 89, a bargaining committee gave Caesars Southern Indiana and their Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians a noon deadline on Saturday to agree to a contract.

A strike was called after Caesars and the EBCI failed to respond. The Teamsters called the non-response a “lack of care and respect for the workers who make them the most profitable casino in the state.”

They said they didn’t want a strike but said none of their members’ demands were unreasonable including having the ability to “retire with dignity.”

“This strike is a direct result of the company’s greed, lack of empath, and the unfair labor practices they have committed since the contract expired,” the Teamsters said in a statement.

Caesars has been closed due to the Ohio River flooding but are expected to open when the waters recede.

When that happens, the Teamsters said there would be a picket line in front of the casino.

“We are calling on all union members, allies, supporters, and the community at large to stand with our members by refusing to cross our picket line and to boycott Caesars Southern Indiana until the strike has ended.”
