DES MOINES, Iowa (KCRG) – An Iowa Senate subcommittee voted 3-0 Thursday to recommend passage of a bill that would place a moratorium on new gaming licenses in Iowa until July 2030.

The bill now heads to the full Senate Local Government Committee for consideration Thursday.

This bill is identical to the Iowa House version of the bill. If Iowa House and Iowa Senate approve their respective bills, it will go to Gov. Kim Reynolds.

The movement at the Iowa Capitol comes one week before the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission is slated to decide on granting Linn County a gaming license of the proposed Cedar Crossing Casino in Cedar Rapids.

Sen. Dawn Driscoll (R-Williamsburg) voted to recommend the bill’s passage Thursday morning. Driscoll’s district includes Riverside where studies have shown Riverside Casino would be most impacted by a casino in Cedar Rapids.

“For my community, for my district, this will negatively, of course, impact Riverside,” Driscoll said. “I’m here to fight for the people that have worked there, our rural communities, and the businesses that are around it.”

Iowa House lawmakers on Thursday will debate their version of the bill which would also place a moratorium on new gaming licenses until July 2030.
