Grand Island Police arrested a Lexington man Friday afternoon after they say he left his toddler in a van while he played games inside the Grand Island Resort Casino.
GIPD Division Chief Dean Elliott says officers were notified of the child being left unattended in the parking lot of the Fonner Park Horse Track around 3:30 p.m. on Friday, May 2, 2025.
“When officers arrived on scene, the driver was observed running back to the vehicle and pulling away and re-parking the vehicle,” said Elliott. “The driver originally denied being inside the casino for a period of time, but video evidence showed he had been in the casino without his 2-year-old child for approximately one hour.”
44-year-old Amilcar Landaverde Roque of Lexington was arrested for Child Abuse. Investigators believe Landaverde Roque was attempting to change parking spots to evade police.
The temperature at the time was around 55 degrees, according to Elliott. The child not injured. He said this is the first incident of a child being left unattended in a vehicle at the GI casino.
