ST. CHARLES, Mo. (KMOV/Gray News) – A man has been charged after police in Missouri say he kidnapped a 74-year-old woman from a casino parking garage then forced her to withdraw money from an ATM.

The incident took place Wednesday around 5 p.m. The St. Charles Police Department says they received a call for a robbery at a QuikTrip gas station located at 1500 Zumbehl Road, KMOV reports.

Following an investigation, police learned 62-year-old Darryl Saddler allegedly approached a 74-year-old woman in the Hollywood Casino parking garage and displayed a firearm. Police say he got into the victim’s vehicle and threatened to kill her if she didn’t drive to an ATM to get him money.

The victim complied and drove the two to QuikTrip. After she withdrew the funds from an ATM inside, police say Saddler took the money and fled in her vehicle.

Officers quickly found the unoccupied vehicle near the intersection of Campus Drive and Zumbehl Road. By 5:40 p.m., they had successfully found and arrested Saddler in the area.

Police praised the victim for driving to a place with a lot of people around and not getting back into the car so she could instead call for help.

“We just recommend that people keep some situational awareness,” Police Lt. Daniel Gibbons said. “So, what I mean by that is just keeping track of what’s going on around you: looking around, keeping track of who’s around you, reading people’s body language, knowing if something bad might be possible to occur.”

The St. Charles County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Saddler with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, armed criminal action, unlawful possession of a firearm and stealing a motor vehicle.

The St. Louis County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has also charged Saddler with kidnapping, vehicle hijacking and two counts of armed criminal action.

Saddler was in custody with a court-ordered $100,000 cash-only bond. His next court hearing was scheduled for Tuesday.
