California Highway Patrol says Nathanuel McCowan is suspected of killing his wife Laketha McCowan, who was found with a gunshot wound on the side of a freeway.
ELK GROVE, Calif. — An Oakland man who is suspected of killing his wife in 2023 was arrested at Sky River Casino in Elk Grove Thursday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Nathanuel McCowan, 49, was taken into custody nearly two years after an investigation began on the shooting death of his wife Laketha McCowan.
The CHP said officers responded to a report of an assault in progress at 1:30 a.m. on Feb. 26, 2023, on the Edwards Avenue offramp from eastbound Interstate 580 in Oakland. When officers showed up, they found a woman on the shoulder of the freeway with a gunshot wound.
The woman was pronounced dead after paramedics arrived at the scene.
Detectives later identified Nathaniel McCowan as the primary suspect in the death.
After nearly two years of investigating the case, CHP said the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office filed charges against McCowan. An arrest warrant was issued after Alameda Superior Court charged McCowan on Thursday.
With the help of officers in the area, the CHP said detectives from the Bay Area found McCowan’s location at Sky River Casino at around 11:50 p.m. Thursday.
The CHP said McCowan was found inside the casino with the help of security and was arrested without incident.
McCowan was taken to Alameda County and booked into Santa Rita Jail.
