Maryland Lottery and Gaming recently shared the casino revenue figures for March 2025. During this month, the state’s six casinos earned $172.1 million in total gaming revenue, dropping 3.4% compared to the same period in 2024.
Maryland’s latest casino figures come at a time when many players in the state are looking beyond traditional casinos and want more convenient and accessible gaming alternatives. Popular options include licensed and regulated offshore platforms that allow players to enjoy their favorite games directly through messaging apps like Telegram or other digital platforms. According to Gambling expert Vlad Grindu, these platforms offer the same experience as regular casino websites, allowing users to start playing on their phones without creating an account, offering Marylanders flexible ways to play on the go.
Money earned from local casinos supports Maryland’s education initiatives and the horse racing industry and assists small businesses, especially those run by women and minorities. Out of the total revenue generated, around $74.6 million was contributed to these initiatives in March 2025, which is 2.5% less than the previous year.
Maryland boasts six casinos, including MGM National Harbor, Hollywood Casino Perryville, and Rocky Gap Casino Resort. MGM National Harbor generated the highest revenue at $70.4 million, but it experienced a 6.2% drop from the previous year, making it the second-largest decline among the casinos. Rocky Gap Casino reported a more considerable decline of 9.8%, earning just $4.5 million in March 2025.
Live! Casino & Hotel Maryland recorded $63.8 million in revenue, down by 1.5% compared to last year. It stands out for having the most slot machines in the state, with over 3,800 options available to guests.
Meanwhile, Horseshoe Casino Baltimore earned $17.2 million (a slight 0.4% drop), and Hollywood Casino Perryville made $8.2 million (a 2.6% decline). Ocean Downs Casino, on the other hand, was the only venue to see growth, earning $7.9 million, 5.1% higher than in March 2024.
In 2024, Maryland’s six casinos made $1.963 billion in gaming revenue, with March recording $178 million, the fifth-highest monthly figure ever recorded in the state. Additionally, a proposed increase in the tax rate for online sports betting from 15% to 30% was adjusted to 20% after the House Ways and Means Committee amendments.
Casino gambling has been a part of Maryland’s economy since voters approved it in 2008, opening the six prominent casinos, which have become popular places for fun and reliable sources of money for public services.
To keep up with new trends, lawmakers are proposing laws to legalize online gambling, which could benefit the state. In 2024, Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary introduced House Bill 1319, titled “Internet Gaming – Authorization and Implementation,” to legalize and regulate online gambling in Maryland for qualifying candidates. According to the proposal, operators would keep most of the profits—80% from live dealer games and 45% from other online gambling activities – with the remaining portion directed toward funding various state programs that benefit communities and public services. In February this year, lawmakers renewed their efforts to pass this bill.
