MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) — New York City has many famous sights and attractions.
A new place to see is scheduled to be open on the east side of Manhattan in May 2025.
The owner and developer of the lot between the FDR Drive and First Avenue from 41st to 38th streets has brought art to the land. It is known as Manhattan’s biggest undeveloped plot of land.
Walkways appeared last year. From 2023 to the fall of 2024, it was known as the Field of Light with visitors getting free tickets to walk among the lights.
The next event will be known as “Path of Liberty: That which unites us,” and it’s described as an immersive experience.
Michael Hershman is the CEO of the Soloviev Group, a private real estate company that owns the land. He said producers and artists are creating video installations and works to be displayed. The themes are centered around America, democracy, and freedoms.
Looking more long term, there are plans for residential buildings with affordable housing, and the project also includes a hotel with a wellness center and a casino.
“We call it Freedom Plaza. Yes, there would be a casino. It’s less than 10% of the square footage. It’s about a museum for freedom and democracy and five-acre park,” Hershman said.
The developers are among some big names vying for three downstate casino licenses.
Other possible sites that have been mentioned include Willets Point, Citi Field, Coney Island, Yonkers, the Bronx, Hudson Yards and Times Square.
A state gaming location board will award three downstate casino licenses by the end of 2025. Applications are due by the summer of 2025.
Any location would also have to be approved by a local review board and also meet land use requirements.
